Due to India’s diverse culture, there’s great diversity in snacks too. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, we have different type of snacks in every region. Some were adopted by us from West and gave it our version while some West adopted from our land.
This mishmash of cultures often led to the creation of something unique. Now you can also savour your favourite vegetarian snacks from VegPlatter. KATHI ROLLS – BURRITO
Burrito - a cylindrical shaped tortilla snack filled with meat, peas, potatoes, rice etc. It was born in Mexico. However, Kolkata's Kathi rolls are quite similar to Burrito and are wrapped in cylindrical paratha with vegetable fillings. You can savour it on the go. Kathi Rolls come in both Veg and Non-Veg.
KULFI – ICE CREAM
Kulfi and Ice Cream are similar on many terms but the difference arises in their texture. Kulfi is creamier than ice cream. It is made by reducing the volume of full cream milk to nearly one-third of the original volume, and then freezing it into the kulfi-moulds for few hours. However, while preparing for Ice Cream, Whipping and Aerating processes are done to have air bubbles and fat droplets.
VADA PAV – BURGER
Vada-Pav is the Indian brother of American Burger. The two might look similar in size and look, but tastes entirely different. In burger, it's veggies and mostly fried meat patty inside sliced bun. The Aamchi Mumbai's Vada Pav has round Batata Vada made of meshed peas, onions and potato. It's fulfilling and loaded with various flavours. Vada Pav is without a doubt Mumbai walas' gift to the world.
PAPAD – NACHOS
Papads are thin crisp disc-shaped Indian food goes well with Roti Sabzi. It’s exact copy in the West is Nachos. Nachos are served with cheese and sauce. Papads and Nachos both are crispy snacks.
MALPUA – PANCAKES
Malpuas are made with batter of all-purpose flour, khoya and baking powder cooked on low-flame in pan. The cooked malpuas are then dipped into sugar syrup for 10 minutes. Malpuas are mostly served with sweet Rabri. Pancakes are made of starch-based batter cooked in hot frying with oil or butter. Pancakes are thin, round and flat and are usually served with honey on the top.
CHUTNEYS – SALSAS
Chutneys and Salsas are almost similar except for one factor- Spiciness. Salsas are usually made with tomatoes and a bit spicier than chutneys. Unlike Chutneys, Salsas are left uncooked. Chutneys are sweet, tangy, sour and can be prepared from mangoes, raisins, mint etc. Salsas are often served with hot Mexican food.
This was our list of Indianized version of Western Snacks. The two foods might taste different on the list, but visibly seem alike.
